Aquatics

AT DAMIAN WARNER FITNESS CENTRE

We are excited to launch a new aquatics program at the south location of Damian Warner Fitness Centre in our spacious, heated pool. The Lifesaving Society’s Swim for Life Program focuses on in-water practice to develop solid swimming strokes and skills. We incorporate valuable Water Smart® education that will last a lifetime. You’re never too young to start, and never too old to learn. We have an aquatics program from all ages and abilities!

Swim for Life - Kid's Lessons

We offer swimming lessons for all ages and abilities, including beginners as well as swimmers who want to build on the basics. In small groups of 4 swimmers per instructor, we focus on of in-water practice to develop solid swimming strokes and skills. We incorporate Lifesaving Society WaterSmart® education in all levels. Levels are available for both Preschoolers (ages 3 - 5) to Swimmers (ages 5+).

Swim for Fitness

Swimming can be a great workout! Our Swim for Fitness program lets you set your own goals to improve overall physical fitness. Available for any ages who already know how to swim, we offer a structured approach based on accepted training principles and practices, including interval training, sprints, and long distance swims.

Parent & Tot Sessions

Spend quality time with your child while you both have fun, learn, socialize. Through structured in-water interaction between parent and child, we stress the importance of play in developing water-positive attitudes and skills. We provide Lifesaving Society Water Smart® tips on keeping your child safe in any aquatic setting. Because activities and progressions are based on child development, registration levels are based on age.

AquaFit Classes

Offered several times a day, aquatic fitness classes at DWFC offer an energetic low-impact workout in a social community atmosphere for all ages. We currently offer both AquaFit and AquaZumba in our heated pools. Classes are included with your membership - book online or at the front desk up to 3 days in advance!

Adult Swim Lessons

Whether you’re just starting out or just want help with your strokes, our Adult Learn to Swim Program is for the young at heart– no matter your age. Set your own goals, work with certified instructors to learn to swim, or improve your current swimming ability and water fitness. You’ll develop water confidence and smooth strokes for swimming lanes or swimming at the beach. We incorporate Lifesaving Society Water Smart® education in all Adult levels.

Open Swim

All members at Damian Warner Fitness Centre have access to a spacious 18m heated pool for lane swimming, self-guided aquatic exercises using our provided equipment, or just for a relaxing swim. Please book your spot on the member app or the online schedule above.

Not sure where to start? Our team members can assist with determining a level upon registration. Please register at the front desk of the South location - spots are limited! You do not need to be a member to attend lessons.

Parent & Tot

Under 3 years old

Level 1: Designed for the 4 to 12-month-old to learn to enjoy the water with the parent
Level 2: Designed for 12 to 24-month-olds to learn to enjoy the water with a parent
Level 3: Designed for the 24 to 36-month-old to learn to enjoy the water with a parent

Preschool

3 - 5 years old

Level 1: We encourage the parent to participate until their child lets them know they can do it themselves. These preschoolers will have fun learning to get in and out of the water. We’ll help them jump into chest-deep water, they’ll float and glide on their front and back, learn to get their faces wet, and blow bubbles underwater.
Level 2: These preschoolers learn to jump into chest-deep water by themselves, and learn to get in and out wearing a lifejacket. They’ll practice going underwater, and they’ll glide on their front and back wearing a lifejacket.
Level 3: These swimmer will progress to both jumping and a sideways entry into deep water while wearing a lifejacket. They’ll learn to recover objects from the bottom in waist-deep water, and they’ll work on kicking and gliding through the water on their front and back.
Level 4: Advanced preschoolers will learn to do solo jumps into deeper water and get out by themselves. They’ll do sideways entries and learn to open their eyes underwater. They’ll master a short swim on their front wearing a lifejacket & gliding and kicking on their side.
Level 5: These swimmers gain confidence with a forward roll entry wearing a lifejacket and treading water for 10 seconds. They’ll work on front and back crawl swims for 5m, interval training, and learn to whip kick.

Swimmers

5 - 15 years old

Level 1: These beginners will become comfortable jumping into water with and without a lifejacket. They’ll learn to open their eyes and hold their breath underwater. They’ll work on floats, glides and kicking through the water on their front and back.
Level 2: Swimmers will jump into deeper water, and learn to be comfortable falling sideways into the water wearing a lifejacket. They’ll be able to support themselves at the surface without assistance, learn to whipkick, swim 10m on their front and back, and be introduced to flutter kick interval training.
Level 3: Swimmers will progress into dives and in-water front somersaults and handstands. They’ll work on 15m of front crawl, back crawl and 10 m of whipkick. Flutter kick interval training increases to 4 x15m.
Level 4: These intermediate swimmers will swim 5m underwater and lengths of front, back crawl, whip kick, and breaststroke arms with breathing.They will complete the Canadian Swim to Survive® Standard, along with front crawl sprints over 25m and 4 x 25 m front or back crawl interval training.
Level 5: Swimmers progress to master shallow dives, cannonball entries, eggbeater kicks, and in-water backward somersaults.They’ll refine their front and back crawl over 50m swims of each, and breaststroke over 25m. Then they’ll pickup the pace in 25m sprints and two interval training swims: 4 x50 m front or back crawl; and 4 x 15 m breaststroke
Level 6: Advanced swimmers will rise to the challenge of sophisticated aquatic skills including stride entries, compact jumps and lifesaving kicks like eggbeater and scissor kick. They’ll develop strength and power in head-up breaststroke sprints over 25m. They’ll easily swim lengths of front crawl, back crawl, and breaststroke, and they’ll even complete a 300m distance swim.

Adult

16+ years old

Level 1: Adult beginners will work towards a 10–15m swim on your front and back. They will learn jump entries from the side and recover an object from the bottom in chest-deep water. They will work towards improving fitness and flutter kick skills with 4 x 9–12 minute interval training.
Level 2: Intermediate swimmers will kick it up a notch working on two interval training workouts of 4 x 25 m kicking and front or back crawl. They’ll be able to perform dive entries and demonstrate breaststroke arms and breathing over 10–15m swims. Swimmers will support self at the surface for 1–2 minutes, and practice handstands in shallow water.
Level 3: Advance swimmers will progress to learn eggbeater strokes, stride entries, and compact jumps. Finally, swimmers will master the front crawl, back crawl, and breaststroke, finishing off with a 300m workout swim and and swim sprinting 25–50 m.

Swim for FITNESS

Any age

Level 1: Confident swimmers will learn warm up stretches, various swim workouts and interval training, pacing, endurance swims, and more in this 10-week adult session.
